Assiniboine Back Packing Tour 1998
September 3 - 7
Labour Day Weekend
As is the case on all of Peter's trips, we had gloriously perfect weather. Five days of roaring hot sunshine during the day with pleasantly cool nights. Just the way we all like it.
Our route started us at the Simpson River trailhead in Kootenay National Park on Hwy 93 between Castle Junction and Radium. We made it into Assiniboine Provincial Park the first day and stayed at Rock Lake Campground (18km). The next day brought us to Lake Magog (15km). Day three saw us explore the Lake Magog area and spend another night next to Magog. We set off on day four to Porcupine campground (15km). The last day brought us over Citadel Pass, across Sunshine Meadows, and to Sunshine Village Ski Resort (13km).
We had only one bear visitation, in the Lake Magog campground, and that grizzly was quite well behaved. The campers next to us at the Porcupine campground fled to our camp in the middle of the night with terrors of bears around their tent. The "bear" turned out to be a baby moose.
A fine dinner was had by all in Banff on the way home.
